Since 23th July, 2008, IIT Bhubaneswar has been running from its mentor institute campus, IIT Kharagpur. The temporary campus for IIT Bhubaneswar is being developed by augmenting the facilities available at IIT Kharagpur Bhubaneswar Extension Campus. Faculty recruitment, creation of laboratories and other support facilities are in full swing. The Institute will operate from the temporary campus at Bhubaneswar from the coming academic session i.e. July 2009. The Government of Orissa has provided 935 acres of land at Arugul near Jatni Railway Station for IIT Bhubaneswar. The Government has also agreed to make available 3 million gallons of water per day, uninterrupted power supply of 5 megawatt and a four-lane road from National Highway No.5 to this new IIT.
 
IIT Bhubaneswar with its 935 acres of land will be designed to have a self contained campus for 10,000 students and 1100 faculty. A Science Park will be part of this institution. The Park will house a large number of industry supported R&D units. It will promote industry relevant collaborative R&D activities with the institute and facilitate practice relevant education.
